August 18, 2025
While you and your team return from vacation, cybercriminals remain relentlessly active. Research from trusted sources like ProofPoint and Check Point reveals a notable surge in phishing attacks during the summer. Here's how to stay vigilant and safeguard your business.
Why Does Risk Increase in Summer?
Cyber attackers exploit the summer travel season by mimicking popular hotel and Airbnb sites, according to Check Point Research. They've detected a 55% rise in vacation-related domain registrations in May 2025 compared to last year, with over 39,000 new domains—1 in 21 flagged as malicious or suspicious.
The late summer back-to-school period also triggers a spike in phishing emails impersonating legitimate university communications, targeting students and staff alike. Even if unrelated to your sector, employees checking personal emails on work devices can inadvertently expose your company to cyber threats with a single click.
How to Protect Yourself and Your Team
Although AI enhances cybersecurity, it also enables attackers to craft more convincing phishing scams. Training your team to recognize red flags is crucial in preventing breaches.
Essential safety tips to defend against attacks:
· Scrutinize suspicious emails. Beyond spotting typos and poor formatting, verify the sender's email address and hover over links to confirm their authenticity, as AI-generated emails can appear highly professional.
· Verify URLs carefully. Look out for misspelled URLs or uncommon domain endings like .today or .info, which are often associated with scam sites.
· Access websites directly. Instead of clicking links, type website addresses into your browser to avoid phishing traps.
· Activate Multifactor Authentication (MFA). MFA adds a critical layer of security, protecting your credentials and sensitive data even if a breach occurs.
· Use caution with public WiFi. When connected to public networks, always use a VPN to shield your data, especially when handling sensitive information like bookings or banking.
· Keep personal email off work devices. Mixing personal and business accounts on company devices increases risk. Maintain separation by using personal devices for personal accounts.
· Consult your MSP about endpoint security. Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tools monitor devices, block phishing attempts, and alert your MSP immediately upon detecting threats, minimizing data exposure.
Phishing threats evolve rapidly, accelerated by AI advancements. Empowering your team with up-to-date knowledge is your strongest defense. Stay alert and protect your business.
